John Barry - The Man With The Midas Touch
This group was originally formed by men and women
who admire and recognize the works of noted composer, John Barry.
We are varied with regard to geographical location, age, gender,
background and ethnic heritage. We are interested in the study and
collection of an informed library of Mr. Barry's compositions, as
well as commentary on his film scores; where films may be screened;
and of course, notations on his life as a great composer. The group
welcomes all who inquire, with the idea that our primary purpose
is to highlight the works and genius of John Barry.
Our directory is based on current and voluntary information from
persons who regularly visit us through the website or e-mail. It
has been developed to build friendship and to increase dialogue
among those who hold Mr. Barry's music in high esteem.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Geoff, Alan and
Ruud for their ideas and efforts in designing this directory. If
you would like to add your own information, please feel free to
do so by completing as much of the following information as possible
in the form below.
Please note, in ALL cases we mean John Barry
music. And also please do not use all CAPITALS; We do not process
them.

Barry was in his top creative mode in the
60s and 70s. I especially like the period between 1976-79, when he did his
most impressive "heavy" scores. I almost gave up my interest in Barry after
"Playing by Heart"…went downhill from there. But for Barry admirers, we
can always look back at fantastic music but might have little (or nothing)
to look forward to. |

Americans is an excellent Jazzy John Barry
composition yet like most of Mr. Barry's music it's not released on CD.
Perhaps the music copyright laws were not what are today, in the '60s or

I'd like this message reach John Barry,
because it's very interesting:
I love watching films. So I see movies very frequently, since I was a boy.
The musics always touched me more than the others. And everybody ever know
I was the expert in movie music.
One day I saw King Kong and one of the songs, played by piano, atracted
me. I got it in a cassete tape and listened hundreds of times. I couldn't
know the reason. Then I watch Somewhere in time. I was puzzled. The song
sent me to infinite. The same strange and strong thing happened again when
I watched Body Heat and Somewhere in Time.
My wife already knows how I loved that songs. So, intending to give me a
birthday gift, she went to the internet and looks for them. When I arrive
home she told me a strange thing. The 4 songs I like most was of the same
author: John Barry. I almost fainted.
That day on I am a John Barry fan. And now I know that a lot of songs I
love, were from the same source.
One day I intend to meet him and hug him. I'll say thanks for putting his
heart in the songs. This way we can know the deeper feelings inside our
hearts and everybody can be a better person. |

Rachmaninoff, Gershwin and Rodrigo were
the best 20th century composers. Barry composed tributes to all of them:
Somewhere in Time (Rachmaninoff; The Cotton Club (Gershwin); and the Deadfall
guitar concerto (Rodrigo). JB's exposition on themes of danger (upside-down,
boogie-woogie for the full orchestra!), sexuality & dignity are the
defining pieces for those qualities. "The James Bond Theme" was
the most influential instrumental composition of the 20th century, an influence
on everything that followed -- perhaps the salvation of orchestral composition
for 4 decades? As a composer, JB's weakest area simply has to be the composition
of melody (this is no Harry Warren, no Hoagy Carmichael). But his intensity
as a conductor and brilliance as an arranger more than compensate -- his
own baton is required to carry his messages' trademark imagery. |

All of JB's albums are excellent, even "Howard
the Duck," which is far superior to the film itself. His early "pre-film"
stuff is just as brilliant as his cinematic classics and it's easier for
me to say that I enjoy his "lest-than-best" stuff as well, which
would be something like "The Whisperers" or "The Legend of
the Lone Ranger." |
| Additional comments |
I'm just grateful that I have most of his
albums which have been released and have been honored to meet him for a
fleeting few seconds to say "Thank You" for the pleasure his music
has given me. The Royal Albert Hall "gig" in 1998 was just the
best and a bonus to see him again in 1999 was the "icing on the cake!"

I first heard JB's brilliance in Octopussy.
I had no idea who he was, nor did I know why I connected to that music in
such a way. I actually made a trip to a record store just to buy the Rita
Coolidge 45 of "All Time High." Years later, I became interested
in film scoring. At the time, the score to Somewhere in Time had my full
attention. It wasn't until a little later that I realized JB's touch was
what had me drawn to the Octopussy music so many years before. I can honestly
say that John Barry single-handedly birthed an interest in film scoring
for me. It is what I hope to ultimately do. Thanks for this website. |

I just discovered this site, and I was always
troubled, wondering if Mr. Barry received the recognition he so assuredly
deserves. I have been a devoted fan since 1962. His music has seen me through
both good and difficult times, with some of the most romantic and emotional
music, that, to me, is unsurpassed in symphonic and orchestral composition.
Thank you, Mr. Barry for a lifetime of musical wonder and magic. |

John Barry is next to John Williams the
super god of film music. There is no comparison to a John Barry soundtrack
in terms of emotional precision and impact. And he has the most personal
and individual style of music I know. Yet his musical themes are always
new and surprisingly original. The soundtrack of Dances With Wolves still
has such a great effect on me. Sometimes I just need to listen to it in
order to fill up my batteries. So, thanks John Barry for your great |

But I love most of the sixties and mid-seventies compositions like Boom, The Ipcress File, The Quiller Memorandum, Deadfall or The Tamarind Seed. In the 80ies John Barry composed such beautiful scores like Body Heat, Frances or Out of Africa.Great!
Additional: John Barry is the best! Unfortunately he has never composed for a movie since Enigma in 2000.
For me John Barry remains the best composer with unforgettable themes and melodies. Thank you Mr. Barry for wonderful years with your wonderful music |

looked after by his wife Laurie whilst I sat in on his rehearsal with the
English Chamber Orchestra in London. I was studying composition at the London
College of Music at the time. I was so inspired that I went on to compose
a whole series of pieces which pay homage to JB and his music. I'm hoping
to have them per- formed in York sometime next year. |

In the 1970s, I wrote a few articles on
the Bond series for "The Composer;" a publication of The John Barry Appreciation
Society; and for "Bondage," a Bond "fanzine." They were the work of an enthusiastic,
though musically naïve, 18-year-old, but I did get some good responses at
the time. He remains my favorite film composer. |

During the period 1964-72, I don't think
there was a better composer on the planet. The rich and varied output of
Barry during this period was unmatched. I enjoy his current work, but that
was his golden age. Barry's detractors who only know him from his current
work need to understand how incredible he was during that period. |

I think that John Barry is quite simply
the greatest ever film music composer. His music is so touching, entertaining
and influential and yet though he's well known he is still so underrated.
He must rank as one of the most important musical figures of the past 50
years and has profoundly influenced his own and several other genres. Long
may he continue... Oh and he should receive a knighthood! |

Unlike many other composers, JB is able
to do so many different works. If you listen to "The Whisperers," you wouldn't
think that it had been written in the 1960s, while some of his other works
deal with popular music of the day. While music in movies has lost much
of its style since the advent of talkies, JB hasn't! His contemporary works
sound as good as those he wrote decades ago. |

No other composer has created music that
stirred my soul, inspired such profound personal reflection, or moved me

Memorable excerpts from his film scores, far more than the popular songs

I first heard Barry at age 12. I Didn't know what I was listening to at the time, just knew it was pretty. The tune was in my head for YEARS, coming in and going out. I bouight my first album at age 13, Thunderball, and have been buying them ever since. I finally heard Quiller Memorandum, and recognized what I had heard so many years ago. Proof positive that my love for his music was instinctive, not learned. He writes music that makes one feel like being a better person, or creating something very beautiful, ones self. I have never heard a Barry piece that was not enjoyable |
