Intrada announce THE DAY OF THE LOCUST

Special Collection Volume 122

Great John Barry album makes world CD premiere at last! Original soundtrack from John Schlesinger 1930s-era drama with Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, William Atherton. In 1974, famed Dot label producer Tom Mack produces two back-to-back classic soundtracks to Paramount movies with similar 1930s Los Angeles settings: CHINATOWN (for ABC label) & THE DAY OF THE LOCUST (for London label). Mack produces both LPs with emphasis on original scores while weaving in period music important to each respective movie, greatly enhancing mood of final album. For THE DAY OF THE LOCUST, John Barry anchors with rich, warm main theme, then surrounds with appropriate variants to fit each scene. For climactic sequence, Barry writes what might be his most intense, dramatic cue of a long and famed career! Intrada CD features same classic program as London LP, presented from mint condition stereo album masters vaulted at Universal Music Group. Notes by Jeff Bond. John Barry conducts.

Intrada Special Collection CD limited to 2000 copies!

Americans to be released on CD

*John Barry / Americans
*Universal Music Jazz France
CD release on November the 9th

Walking a tightrope between the wide-screen spectacular and the /film/ /d'auteur/, John Barry is a sensitive and sophisticated composer whose most famous scores (say, action movies, the Bond films and "The Persuaders"), were poor camouflage for a more secret form of inspiration whose character was introspective. In Barry's career, "Americans" stands out clearly. In 1975, Polydor Records gave John Barry the opportunity to freely record a quite personal 12" LP that was his first album outside films, and Barry structured his "Americans" concept: a vast album that reflected his visual and sound-impressions of The United States in six original compositions, including a sumptuous 'Yesternight suite' some eighteen minutes long. "It's like an imaginary soundtrack," says the composer. "Instead of appearing on a screen, the images come up from inside me." Combining some of the best soloists in jazz (Dick Nash, Ronnie Lang, Tony Terran) with a symphony orchestra, "Americans" is a permanent firework display that constitutes a peak in the composer's opus, a work whose swing allows glimpses of an overhanging melancholy tinged with lyrical 'tristesse' and disillusionment. With this first issue of "Americans" on CD, John Barry makes his entrance in the "Ecoutez le cinéma!" series. More than a simple reissue, it's an event.

Bobby Graham, legendary drummer and former leader of the John Barry Seven dies

Bobby Graham and John BarrySeptember is becoming a bad month for deaths. We are very sad to announce that Bobby Graham, legendary drummer and former leader of the John Barry Seven has died after losing his battle against cancer. Bob was one of the finest rock 'n' roll drummers the UK has ever seen. He played on countless hit records (and many misses, too) both as a session musician and as a member of groups like Joe Brown & The Bruvvers and the JB7.

It's especially sad for me because Bob was a great help when I was writing the first biography of John Barry. He had a fund of very amusing stories about life as a musician, but the most interesting one concerned the closely-guarded secret that he had played drums on all the Dave Clark Five recordings, while Clark himself, who was not a technically proficient drummer, masterminded the recordings. Bob had accepted a larger than usual session fee to keep this to himself but after so many years decided it was time to make it public! During one of our conversations he even offered to fix me up with a Filipina wife (he had just married one himself) but I told him I was too used to being on my own!

He will doubtless be sorely missed by all his friends and family and it is fortunate that so many of his performances will live on in the form of records and CDs. His autobiography, The Session Man, is still widely available at a bargain price. It's a fitting memory and tribute to his lengthy career.

Hollywood In Vienna - John Barry - October 14, 2009

John Barry in Vienna

World-renowned film composer John Barry will be honored on October 14th, 2009 by the City of Vienna at the film music gala concert „HOLLYWOOD IN VIENNA" with the newly established „Max Steiner Life Achievement Award", in remembrance of the Viennese film music pioneer Max Steiner.

Few composers of the past half-century have enjoyed as much popular success or worldwide influence as John Barry, born in York, England, in 1933. The winner of five Oscars, four Grammys and other honors ranging from America’s Golden Globe to Britain’s Anthony Asquith Award, has written some of the most memorable movie music of our time: Born Free, Midnight Cowboy, Goldfinger, Out of Africa, Dances With Wolves, Somewhere in Time and dozens of other scores.

Barry will be the first film composer to receive the Max Steiner Award and he considers this prize as one of the biggest honors of his life. He will accept the award in person and will take over the baton himself to conduct highlights of his film music ("Goldfinger") with the prestigious Radio-Symphony Orchestra Vienna in the Vienna concert hall.

Main conductor of the „HOLLYWOOD IN VIENNA" Gala Concert will be Nicholas Dodd. He has already worked with John Barry in several concerts, including a "Tribute to John Barry" evening with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London´s Royal Albert Hall in 2007. Furthermore, Nicholas Dodd served as conductor and arranger of the past Bond scores by David Arnold, such as "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace".

The "Hollywood in Vienna" concert program will include the most famous film scores by John Barry, such as a "James Bond Suite", "Out of Africa", "Dances with Wolves" and "Born Free". Apart from Barry´s compositions Dodd will also present music by Max Steiner, John Williams, David Arnold and Ennio Morricone in the first part of the gala. The concert will be broadcast via several European radio stations.

On October 9th & 10th 2009 John Barry, as well as Bruce Broughton and Austrian born Hollywood composer Harald Kloser will also take part in an International Film Music Symposium at the Vienna University for Music and Performing Arts.

Hanover Street CD release Varèse Sarabande Soundtrack Club

Music Composed by John Barry

Arguably the most sought after, never-before-released, score by John Barry! Without question it is one of the greats … by one of the greats! Hanover Street (1979) is finally available! A 30th anniversary rescue! Believe it!

An epic love story set during the London Blitz of WWII … this is prime Barry from the time of The Black Hole (1979), Moonraker (1979), Somewhere In Time (1980) and Raise The Titanic (1980).

War-torn Europe is the setting for this Peter Hyams-directed romantic action/adventure from Columbia Pictures about the fateful entanglements of two men in love with the same woman. Lt. David Halloran (Harrison Ford), a courageous American bomber pilot, and a British nurse (Lesley-Anne Down) accidentally meet during an air raid and fall instantly in love. Committed to an assignment, David asks her to meet him two weeks later in spite of the fact that she is married. And she does. Her husband, Paul Sellinger (Christopher Plummer), is a British intelligence officer in charge of a special, dangerous mission behind enemy lines. As fate would have it, Halloran is chosen to fly Sellinger on the task. When their plane is shot down, the two must work together to complete the mission - and it is only then that Halloran discovers who Sellinger is.

John Barry’s complete score has been painstakingly restored, filling the CD to capacity! Over 60 minutes of music in glorious stereo plus four bonus cues taken from the sole surviving mono source … this release of Hanover Street has been nothing short of an epic production unto itself. It’s a score that has been held as a holy grail by many since the day they first heard it! This very special release, which launches a very special year for the Varèse Sarabande CD Club, is for them and for all fans of lush, unabashedly romantic, film music!

Two copies of John Barry: The Man with the Midas Touch as prizes.

This might only apply to those in Ireland / UK, but you never know ....

The Irish radio station RTÉ Lyric FM schedules two film music-related programmes every week. On Sundays, between 4.30 and 6.30 p.m. (UK time) and on Mondays between 7 and 8 p.m. They also commission occasional film music concerts.

Host Aedín Gormley appears very knowledgeable on the subject of films and music, and is an excellent presenter. I recommend giving it a try, especially tomorrow when she is giving away two copies of John Barry: The Man with the Midas Touch as prizes.

It's available via radio in Ireland, via various TV cable and satellite providers in the UK and on-line anywhere in the world - I think. Go to http://www.rte.ie/lyricfm/movies/ and test the listen live link if you live outside Ireland.

Possible "Billy" revival.

A workshop of "Billy" took place in early October, apparently with a view to a possible regional tour / West End production.

The cast was:

Lee Mead - Billy Fisher
Denise Welch - Mrs Fisher
Tim Healey - Mr. Fisher
Stephen Matthews - Stamp
Stephen Tate - Shadrack
Sarah Lark - Rita
Georgina Rich - Liz
Kathryn Rooney - Barbara

Directed by Paul Kerryson
Produced by Kenny Wax

Don Black and the writers were apparently in attendance.

Paul Kerryson is the artistic director of the new Leicester Curve Theatre and does do musicals. Kenny Wax is a general manager/producer for a number of shows, usually in collaboration with other, bigger production companies.

If it happens, they might use Leicester as the out-of-town try-out and see how it goes down, then tour it if they think it'll work.

Lyrics by Don Black

The outstanding lyric-writing of Don Black was celebrated on Sunday 17th August at the London Palladium. A BBC Radio 2 presentation, hosted by Sir Michael Parkinson, the star-studded cast included: David Arnold, Jonathan Ansell, Gary Barlow, Elkie Brooks, Craig David, Maria Friedman, Raza Jaffrey, Joe Longthorne, Lee Mead, Ryan Molloy (Jersey Boys) Mica Paris, Matt Rawle, Marti Webb, Hayley Westenra and Michel LeGrand. Musical director Mike Dixon, conducted the seventy-piece Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a tribute that included: 'Born Free', 'Thunderball', 'To Sir With Love', 'Diamonds Are Forever', 'On Days Like These', 'Ben', 'Sam', 'Love Changes Everything', and many more.

There was also a special appearance by Don Black himself and a world premiere of songs from Don's new musical, written with Michel Le Grand, 'The Count Of Monte Cristo'.

Fortunately, the concert was recorded and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Friday 22nd August at 7.30 p.m. BST.  It's likely that the programme will be available afterwards, for 7 days, as part of BBC's "listen-again" facility. We cannot guarantee, however, that it will be available to those not living in the UK.

Vic Flick, GuitarmanVic Flick, Guitarman (Paperback - 192 pages) by Vic Flick

The John Barry Seven only existed for about eight years, and in truth was only really successful for around half of that time. Yet all four of the men who led the band during its relatively short existence have now written or had biographies written about them. John Barry was the first, followed by drummer Bobby Graham, trumpeter Alan Bown and now guitarist Vic Flick becomes the fourth. His is a fascinating book concerning the life and career of a man who always wanted to make his living through playing the guitar. By no means a household name on either side of the Atlantic, we learn how Flick nevertheless became the leader of the incomparable John Barry Seven and eventually the man to turn to for those crucial studio recordings.

SOUND COPYRIGHT: THE EU POSES A SERIOUS THREAT TO MUSIC LOVERS

It seems that politicians always think they know better than experts. The Irish EU Commissioner, supposedly charged with guarding Europe's musical heritage, is proposing changes that could well have the opposite effect.

Despite two exhaustive studies which have come down firmly against extending the present 50 year term for sound copyright, the EU wants to raise it to 95 years.

Consider the following scenario:  a major record company issues a recording which does not sell very well, so it is deleted from the catalogue after five years.  Another record company could ask for permission to license the recording for reissue, but it would involve significant payments in fees which would force a high charge to be made for the CD, and possibly render the whole exercise uneconomic. Fifty years after the original recording was released any record company could reissue the music without having to pay a fee, thereby reducing the cost of production, although royalties would still have to be paid to the composers and lyricists. This is the current situation, and it has resulted in a number of small record companies offering the public many interesting, but previously neglected, recordings of unique material which is no longer of any interest to the major record companies.

If the EU proposals become law, the same recording, deleted five years after the original release, could remain 'lost' to music lovers for a further 90 years. Not only would this greatly diminish the wide variety of recordings currently available, it would also deprive many composers of the opportunity to earn royalties on their music.

Surely it is possible to devise a fair scheme whereby the original recording companies retain the copyright so long as they make the recordings continually available to prospective record buyers. If they fail to keep the recordings in their catalogue, then it should fall into the public domain after a few years so that anyone else could release it if they wished. This would ensure that many fine recordings from the past would be available, rather than locked up in record company vaults for longer than the lifetime of most people on earth.

The main concern must surely be to increase the availability of music, to the general advantage of everyone – especially musicians. The fear is that the EU's proposals would have the opposite effect.

Most of the major record companies are part of giant international entertainment conglomerates controlled by accountants in the USA or Japan. Are these really the right people to be charged with the future of Europe's musical heritage?

The British Government has asked for the public's opinions. Please visit the following website and make your feelings known.

http://www.ipo.gov.uk/press/press-release/press-release-2008/press-release-20080718.htm

If you need further evidence of the weakness of the European Union's proposals, you need look no further than the USA, where the term of sound copyright was increased in the late 1990s. It has resulted in hardly any releases of vintage recordings. American music lovers now look to Europe for recordings of their great artists from the first half of the last century.

MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS

Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume 59
Date: 1972
Tracks: 14

Mary Queen Of Scots - first time on CD by IntradaWorld premiere CD release of original soundtrack from Hal Wallis production starring Vanessa Redgrave, Glenda Jackson, Patrick McGoohan, Timothy Dalton. Academy Award-nominated score by John Barry anchors with incredibly gentle "Mary's Theme" for harpsichord, strings. In contrast is dynamic secondary theme for brass that heralds 16th century setting. Powerful idea spotlights trumpets with rhythmic idea using two-part harmony while French horns impose powerful, angular theme underneath. Bravura Barry! Varied score also takes dramatic turn with dark material, James Bond-ish ideas plus lovely melody for Vanessa Redgrave to sing ("Vivre et Mourir".) While mono-only scoring elements made rounds for recent Universal DVD presentation, Intrada licensed precious original Decca stereo album masters housed in UMG vaults. While additional music was unavailable for release, Intrada proudly offers entire 1971 stereo album as produced by composer. Program offers music both haunting & powerful, results in one of Barry's all-time greats. Authoritative notes by Jon Burlingame illuminate film production & scoring. John Barry conducts. The Alan Bown Set Before and Beyond

Alan Bown SetA review by Geoff Leonard
6 September 2007

This is the second book to be written by or about a former leader of The John Barry Seven. And, just as in the case of Bobby Graham’s effort, this joint biography by Jeff Bannister & Alan Bown is thoroughly recommended.

Whether you are fans of the Alan Bown Set, of that music or that era in general, or are merely curious about life with the JB7 after the Vic Flick/Bob Graham era, this is the book for you.

Of particular interest to John Barry fans will be the account of Alan & Jeff joining the band, the comings and goings of various members, tales of touring the UK & Germany with the likes of Billy Fury & Brenda Lee, their on-stage repertoire (which had changed markedly from Vic Flick days), and the sad demise of the band when John Barry decided it had run its course.

Two John Barry compilation projects for release later this year.

Following the postponement last year we are pleased to announce that the two John Barry projects are now back in the record company's schedules.

The "Best of" compilation is set for a March 2007 release and the box-set probably a month or so later.

Once we have full details of all the tracks we will post the details here - assuming, of course, we get permission!

The "best of" CD probably won't have any surprises for the dedicated fan, but it will be a rare opportunity for a cross-label compilation.

On the other hand, the box-set should contain some rarities (on CD) though with licensing still taking place, nothing can be certain.

John Barry - The Man with the Midas Touch

Just an update to inform everybody that the book is finished, certainly as far as the text is concerned. It's just a question of negotiating the use of a few photos before we can turn it over to a publisher. So hopefully, the book will be available at the start of UK summer.

It's possible sales will be restricted to on-line purchasing, either direct from ourselves, or via reputable sites such as Amazon, FSM etc. The main reason for this should suit us all. If we leave out the middle-men, i.e. wholesalers and distributors, we have a far greater chance of recouping our costs. Also, retailers like Virgin & W.H. Smiths insist on a massive discount of around 40% before they will even consider stocking your book. It didn't happen in the end, but we worked out if Virgin had bought the 50 copies they were considering, we would have made £1 a book!

If we can sell enough copies direct to the fans, we can afford to charge less for the book! So it all makes perfect sense.

10 new Walt Disney Records titles are being uploaded to iTunes.
Amongst them – JAN 16 2007

The Black Hole - iTunes
This is a scan of the LP cover

1. The Black Hole Soundtrack - NOT PREVIOUSLY AVAILABLE

According to Randy Thornton (producer of numerous Disney film score and theme park releases), Barry's THE BLACK HOLE will be included in the next batch of iTunes-only releases from Walt Disney Records coming 1/16.

He also provides some insight into the original digital recording and subsequent transfer for iTunes:

"Now before someone cries foul, I will explain the status of "The Black Hole Soundtrack". Though this was the first digitally recorded soundtrack, the digital technology of 1979 is not compatible with digital technology of today (or even 1982 when CD's were introduced). This soundtrack was recorded with 4bit resolution at 32kHz sampling, thus making a pure digital release not only impossible, but any attempt to upsample or convert them would result in a recording far worse than the analog conversion that was done at the time. The reason it has taken me so long to get this soundtrack re-released is that I wanted to make absolutely sure that there was no way I could use the original digital recordings. I also couldn't include more of John Barry's score than was originally released - as the album, as it stands, is all that was legally cleared for release. I did, however, hunt down the original analog transfer from 1979, digitally transferred and restored at 24/96 and re-created the album's original content. I know some of you more 'passionate' will still be disappointed, but there is nothing more anyone could do. Still, even at the iTunes 128kbs compression, the album has never sounded better!"

Thanks to Doug Lacey for the information.
